PM meets with Commander of United States Pacific Command

Harris, Jr., Commander of the United States Pacific Command, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha. Lt. Gen. Werachon Sukondhapatipak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, disclosed gist of the meeting as follows:

The Prime Minister welcomed Commander of the United States Pacific Command who visited Thailand to attend opening ceremony of Exercise Cobra Gold 2017. He also conveyed his congratulations to the newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump.

Adm. Harry B. Harris, Jr. took the opportunity to express condolence over the passing of His Majesty late King Bhumibol, and conveyed felicitation toward His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebpayavarangkun. He also affirmed cordial relations between Thailand and the U.S. in all areas, including military relations, and expressed confidence that the U.S. President was ready to promote strategic partnership between the two countries for prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.

Commander of the United States Pacific Command added that Exercise Cobra Gold 2017 was participated by personnel from 29 nations, while the Prime Minister was of the view that promoting cooperation between the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the U.S. Armed Forces would lay a solid foundation for the reinforcement of relations and cooperation in other areas between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also commended the U.S. for their priority placed on maintaining interactions and continuity of iterations, as well as personnel development, logistics supply, and munitions maintenance. He called for the U.S. to provide educational support which would be a cooperation for mutual benefits.

Both parties also came to terms that peacekeeping is a mission that needs cooperation from all the countries. The Prime Minister affirmed that Thailand has placed importance on peacekeeping at the global stage. He also called on both countries to seek new channels of cooperation under strategic partnership for the region’s interests.
